The Informant
29′, Latvia, 2026
An 80-year-old photographer embarks on a surreal quest to discover why his name appears on a list of KGB agents, despite having always opposed the Soviet system.
Those who are named in the published lists of KGB archives are largely despised in today’s Latvia. Some ‘outed’ informants were often responsible for ruining lives, others were victims of the system. They ended up on these lists not because they were collaborators but because they opposed the regime and endured regular interrogations under the KGB.
The film follows an 80-year-old photographer who meets others whose names are on the list, searching for the reasons why his name appears there. The director—himself the son of the protagonist—embarks on a visually poetic and controversial journey through the streets of Riga and into the depths of forests beneath the mushrooms, to uncover the truth.
