A Woman Named Gaida

Dir. Kalvis Rudzītis, 8′, Latvia, 2024

In a post-Soviet rural town, an old woman named Gaida sells vegetables by the roadside, where she meats people that are archetypical residents of rural towns in Latvia. Through brief interactions, the story paints a picture of a life marked by loneliness and a search for belonging. Central to the narrative is Gaida’s relationship with her distant son. Her longing for his visit reflects a deep sense of abandonment. As she yearns for a connection that remains out of reach, her son’s eventual arrival comes tragically too late.
