Valga Hot Shorts is accepting submissions!

Valga Hot Shorts (VHS) returns for the second edition and is accepting submissions from Estonia and Latvia until April 15th, exploring this year’s theme “The paradox of adapting.”

“VHS programme consists of five cassettes, each approaching the core theme of the festival – the paradox of adapting – from different angles,” explains artistic director Johannes Lõhmus. “We are on the lookout for Estonian and Latvian shorts, which we’ll curate alongside selected international films.”

Festival director Gert Põrk shares the festival’s vision: “VHS was born from a desire to celebrate short film as a distinct art form. Additionally, hosting the festival in the border town of Valga creates a meaningful connection between Estonia and Latvia.” The Estonian-Latvian connection is also central to programming. “Alongside international films, we aim to include at least one film from either Estonia or Latvia in each screening, hoping to engage audiences from both countries,” Põrk adds.

VHS welcomes animations, documentaries, and fiction films. Submissions are open from February 21st until April 15th. Maximum length for films is 30 minutes. For more information and to submit your film, please visit https://valgahotshorts.ee/opencall-en/

The complete program for VHS 2025 will be announced in May. The festival will take place at Valga Cultural Center and throughout the Valga-Valka urban space during July 18-20.
